Using writing prompts in algebra classes

This is a companion post for a talk that my teaching mentor, Nicole Gray, and I gave on Saturday 11/17/2018 at the AMATYC Conference 2018 in Orlando Florida. The following article is written for fellow instructors of beginning and intermediate algebra. Welcome to all you, kindred spirit. We deeply respect the fact that you spend your working life helping others learn about their inner mathematical genius. Thank you, now and always, for your dedication to this job.In this talk, we described our use of writing prompts in our beginning and intermediate algebra classes. We design these prompts to improve our students’ ability to understand and remember the notation, vocabulary and concepts that they study in our classes. We have found that these writing prompts enhance our classroom discussions and lead to improved student success in our classes. We hope that some of the ideas we present here can help you in your daily work with students.
